The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, SHMEC , Kadakkal was started in the year 2002 with student strength of 60. The department is honoured to have well qualified and experienced faculty and an equally enthusiastic technical team in various fields of specializations, such as Power Electronics, Power Systems, Electrical Machines, Control Systems & Electronics and well experienced Technical Support Staff. The Department maintains a stable foundation and strong commitment to teaching and continues to progress in creative research & development and engage in constant expansion of enriching knowledge.
To prepare the students to meet the demands of growing industries and to mould them into successful professionals, globally competent and morally upright, in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, contributing to nation building and progress of humanity.

Analog and Digital Circuits Lab
The Electronic Circuits Lab is equipped with AC/DC power supplies, function generators, oscilloscopes, training kits for the circuits, IC testers, solder/desolder stations, digital stopwatches, breadboards, digital multimeters and LCR meters. The purpose of this lab is for familiarizing basic concepts of Engineering Circuit Analysis, and to illustrate and reinforce these concepts and provide hands-on experience to the students.This lab is used to conduct a wide range of experiments in Electrical Engineering, such as Diode Circuits, Power Supplies, Optoelectronic Devices, Analysis and Design of BJT and MOSFET Amplifiers, Operational Amplifier Circuits, Power Amplifiers, Frequency Analysis, Oscillator Circuits, Active Filters, Digital and Timing Circuits and to train Engineers and Technicians on the fundamentals as well as advanced electronic circuits and applications.
Systems and Control Lab
The main objective of this laboratory is to get a basic understanding for how feedback control can be used to modify the behaviour of a dynamic system. The students can understand and practice the modelling, simulation and implementation of a physical dynamical system by a linear time invariant ordinary differential equation, can analyze the under damped, over damped and critically damped cases. Equipments include Synchro transmitters and receivers, Differential synchro transmitters, AC servomotor, Function generators, Gyroscope and gyro-stabilized platform, magnetic amplifier, Oscilloscopes 15 Mhz. Real time, Digital storage Oscilloscope 20 Mhz., DC position control system, Process control simulator, Stepper motor and controllers, Transfer function analyzer, Multimeters, Power Supplies, Digital control system trainer, p-IV stand alone PCs, and other control system software, Digital controller kit, Stand alone DSP kit, Micro controller etc.
Measurements and Instrumentation Lab
Various measurements and instrumentation systems are studied here. Calibration of Ammeters, Voltmeters, Energy meters etc are done. The lab is equipped with sufficient measuring instruments like bridges and potentiometers needed for practical classes. The lab is also having the facility of instrumentation modules and software like LabVIEW and SCADA. It includes various resistive, capacitive and inductive measurement systems, LVDTs and strain gauges, thermocouples and RTDs, Spot deflection Galvanometer, Weins Bridge Oscillator and Wheatstones Bridge. The lab also contains many basic electrical variables and time measurement equipments such as Frequency Counters, Digital Stopwatches, Digital Multimeters, Electronic Energy Meter Electronic Standard Cells and Digital Oscilloscopes.
Power Systems Lab
This laboratory is equipped with the power system components employed in the real world. The simulation of power systems can be done in any of the softwares available in the lab. The testing of any power system equipment can be done within the capacity of each testing equipment. It is equipped with Power frequency AC/DC high voltage test set (100 kV DC/70 kV AC) , Solid state relay test sets, Electromechanical relay test set, transformer oil testing set (manual and automatic), Cable testing equipment, Electrostatic field plotters ,a full fledged power system simulation software ' Mipower ', overcurrent and over voltage relays, Static relays, and power quality analyzer. It is used for teaching basic and advanced concepts in power system generation, transmission and distribution, and training in power quality analysis. For student projects, the lab is used for power system modeling and analysis and power quality. The lab is primarily used for teaching power system (basic and advance modelling, transmission lines, generation, distribution network and fault analysis, protective relays characteristics and schematics, and power quality analysis.
Power Electronics Laboratory
Different types of Power Electronic circuits are designed and implemented here. Actual controlling of drives and machines like stepper motor, fan motor etc are implemented. The Power Electronics Lab is equipped with Power Electronics Training System- Power MOSFETS, Power Thyristors, Chopper/invertors Control Units, Thyristors Controllers, Function Generators, Oscilloscopes, Powerscopes, Multimeters and Signal Generators.
Electrical Machines Lab
This is one of the prestigious and the oldest lab in the department. The lab has enough facilities for conducting practical classes for two classes simultaneously. Experiments are done on various AC and DC machines to study their characteristics and evaluate their performance. The lab is equipped with Three phase alternator D.C machine sets, Three phase synchronous induction motor, Three phase slip-ring induction motor, Three phase squirrel cage induction motor, Three phase double cage induction motor, Three phase pole changing induction motor, Induction machine ,D.C machine sets,DC motor- amplifying set, Single phase induction motor, Isolated D.C machines, Identical D.C machine sets, 3 Phase Slip ring I/M -dc generator set, Single Phase transformer, Three Phase transformer, Single phase and Three phase auto-transformer. Loading rheostats and choke coils, DC and ac motor starters, CTs and PTs, DC indicating meters, AC indicating meters, Frequency meters, Analog and digital multimeters, Clip-on meters, Stroboscope, Tachometers, Stop watches, Synchronizing lamp sets etc.
Electrical and Electronics Workshop
The students gain knowledge on different types of electrical accessories, types of wiring, basic electronic circuits etc. They also get hands on experience on various wiring circuits. It includes Drilling machine, Bench vice, Tool grinding machine, Coil winding machine, Oscilloscopes, Soldering stations, Signal generator, Multimeters, Models of insulators, machines & accessories, wiring tools etc.
The lab is equipped with a large no. of 8085 & 8086 microprocessor kits along with the peripherals and microcontrollers. It includes 8085 based microprocessor kits, 8086 based microprocessor kits, Kit with EPROM programmer facility, Add-on digital bread boards, IC design kits, Oscilloscopes, Signal generators etc.
The students get an exposure to software languages like C. Various numerical techniques are applied using these software languages. Software which includes C, C++, ETAP, PSPICE, PYTHON, MATLAB and Tool boxes, MS Office etc.
Apart from highly equipped Central Library the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department separately owns a standard library.This Department Library has several foreign and well known publishers’ books and study materials related to Electrical Engineering along with the textbooks and reference books prescribed by the University of Kerala as part of the Electrical Engineering curriculum. The Department is proud as the Faculty Members and students rely on the library faithfully for their reference.
Electrical Engineer’s Association of SHMEC (EEAS)
EEAS is the joint venture of the staff and students of Electrical and Electronics Department. It is a noble attempt to create a platform on which one can discuss ideas, practice and articulate a shared vision for progress in the areas of interest. EEAS will help in achieving career goals, technological innovation and continuous improvement. Our primary objective is to develop a passion in students for electrical and electronics engineering and help them achieve their goals. As an organization at the campus level, we aspire to create a platform for students to showcase their ideas and skills, assist them in their work and keep them abreast on all the developments in the field. In addition to enhancing the technical background of students, we also give due importance in developing their organizational and management skills. Our goal is to mould a smarter generation of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. EEAS brings together eminent personalities from organizations of high repute such as Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and enables students to engage in interactions with them EEAS has initiated in conducting workshops, interactive seminar sessions, lectures consistently every year in SHM.
Faraday Club was established on SHMEC in 2004 .The objective is provides facilities for co-curricular and extracurricular activities of EEE students.
